Reporting is more useful when it can explain where a number came from. This work connects my billing pipeline contribution with the wider platform’s consumption transparency.

From reported aggregates to the raw usage behind them.
Deterministic reporting and billing aggregates, raw-usage linkage, and Kusto-backed reporting APIs support consumption transparency and charge investigation.
The next question is always “why?”
A consumption total answers how much a customer used. It does not, on its own, answer which underlying usage contributed to that total or how a charge can be investigated.
For consumption-based services, reporting and billing need to remain understandable together. The ability to trace a result back to its source makes a number something that can be explained rather than simply accepted.
What the platform supports
The wider platform provides deterministic reporting and billing aggregates linked to raw usage. Kusto-backed reporting APIs expose consumption information for reporting and investigation.
Deterministic aggregates
Consistent aggregation gives reporting and billing a dependable foundation for interpreting consumption.
Raw-usage traceability
Linking aggregates to underlying usage supports auditability and investigation of reported consumption and charges.
Queryable reporting
Kusto-backed reporting APIs make consumption information available for reporting experiences and investigation.
Platform context, not an authorship claim: these are capabilities of the wider system. My individual contribution is described separately below.
My contribution
I delivered the consumption billing pipeline underlying this work, including the aggregation and delivery of invoice-ready usage. That implementation is covered in the Consumption Billing System case study.
I also presented billing reporting transparency and auditability to senior leadership at Microsoft’s annual engineering summit in Redmond, explaining how the work supports a clearer understanding of consumption.
My contribution here is the delivered billing pipeline and communicating its relationship to consumption transparency. The reporting APIs and broader platform capabilities are not presented as components I individually authored.
Make charges explainable.
The value of this platform capability is a clearer connection between consumption, reporting, and billing. Deterministic aggregates and raw-usage traceability support investigating charges and understanding the data behind a reported total.
For my work, this was also an opportunity to connect engineering detail with a product-level concern: why dependable consumption data matters to the people using it.
A trustworthy number is not just calculated correctly. It can be traced and explained.
